Spotlight shone on Staffordshire’s women in business

In November, NatWest business team joined forces with the Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce and award-winning business support service GetSet for Growth to host an inspiring afternoon celebrating local women in business.

Part of this year’s Staffordshire Business Festival, over 100 attendees enjoyed an afternoon of networking with their peers and an inspirational presentation from guest speaker Bev Hurley CBE, CEO of YTKO. Bev shared her frank and refreshingly honest experiences from the front-line of building and running a business, including the challenges she’s faced along the way and how she continues to tackle them.

Ready. GetSet. Celebrate!

GetSet for Growth West of England recently celebrated their 1 year anniversary. Having helped more than 500 businesses in the area and created 100 new jobs already, reaching this exciting milestone called for a celebratory event! Clients and partners alike, including NatWest, JBP PR and the University of the West of England, were entertained on arrival by some incredible tricks performed by magician Adam Richards.

Guests enjoyed hearing from West of England Project Director Phil Stott, about the team’s fantastic achievements throughout the year. This was followed by GetSet client Doubleshot TV, who discussed the increasing importance of video for business and Co-founder of the award-winning Pieminister Tristan Hogg, later enlightened the room with his pearls of pie wisdom. Networking and nibbles followed the evening’s learning, including some of Pieminister’s delicious pies.

Despite the Brexit doom and gloom, rising inflation and the recent hit to the Pound, there was good news from the ONS on Wednesday as they announced unemployment had only seen a very small increase on the previous quarter, indicating continuing confidence in the economy; good news for employees and employers!

“It’s reassuring that we’re in a growth conducive environment”, says YTKO CEO, Bev Hurley CBE, “but our own experience, 30 years of supporting other growing businesses and feedback from our current client base tells us that the concern of the average SME is as much about hiring and retaining the right teams as it is about growing it in the first place. There’s little point in increasing your headcount, if you don’t have the right people in the right roles, proper review and reward systems in place and an idea of how that team can develop and grow with you.”

EEF represents UK manufacturers and helps their members thrive through campaigning, business consulting, resources, apprenticeship programmes, and training. It opens up a window of opportunity for more business owners to up-skill their knowledge and up-scale their businesses.

GetSet London support budding entrepreneurs at local school’s Dragon’s Den competition

Lauriston Lights’ mission is a simple one. They want to help their students to build their confidence and prosper, both through their secondary school education and into their future career paths.

By attending summer camps, which have been running for the last 3 years, students come together to learn both hard and soft skills through programmes such as Philosophy for Children (P4C), debating, and career advisory one-to-one sessions. Students are also able to access mentor support through university students who help to inspire children through exercises, workshops, role-plays and competitions.

In a little under 3 years, they are ecstatic to have reached this fantastic milestone, with £2million of the finance being raised for UK businesses this year, and half a million raised in July 2016 alone.

Introducing the 1000 Trades Networking Club

GetSet for Growth recently joined forces with partners 1000 Trades, neighbourhood bar and kitchen, and local estate agents Arkade Property, to give local businesses in the Birmingham area a chance to mingle with their neighbours over a drink or two. And, it was certainly an evening to remember with 50+ like-minded business people in attendance!

The event was a huge success and we wanted to share a few snaps (above) from the night. We were pleased to see a range of creative businesses in attendance, as well as representatives from our partners NatWest, Barclays and Williams & Glyns to name a few.
